Dr. Alan Morelli

It was during biology class at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY when I first realized that the study of the life sciences, and ultimately medicine, would be my future. The idea of learning how the human body functions and using that knowledge to help people, treat illness, and hopefully cure disease was the appeal for me.

As an undergraduate at the University of Vermont, I combined my passion for skiing, biking, and the outdoors with the pursuit of pre-medical studies. The experience of living in Vermont was so special, that after graduation I stayed on for a fifth year of post-graduate research in the Department of Microbiology/ Immunology at the UVM School Of Medicine and of course to ski!

Although sad to leave Vermont, I eagerly entered New York Medical College in the fall of 1978 on a full scholarship through the National Health Service Corps, a division of the U.S. Public Health Service. I soon realized that caring for infants, children and adolescents really inspired me. To help children stay healthy and be a part of their lives as they mature into young adults continues to be extremely satisfying to this day. After graduation from medical school with honors in 1982, I completed three demanding yet rewarding years of pediatric residency at the Children's Hospital at Yale-New Haven. I have been fortunate to train at some of the best hospitals in the country under the tutelage of many well respected physicians and mentors.

To fulfill my commitment to the NHSC, I actively sought and accepted the position as the founder/director of the Southfield Community Organization Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Center, where I provided pediatric care to medically underserved children of inner city Stamford. During my four-year tenure, I served as the City of Stamford school physician, and directed the City of Stamford Well Baby Clinics. The outpatient care of underserved children, together with top-notch tertiary center training in acute care pediatrics has given me a unique clinical perspective and served me well during more than 20 years in private practice with New England Pediatrics.

As an attending physician at the Stamford Hospital for many years, I have served on the Medical Board, the Pediatric Executive Committee, the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and as the Assistant Chief of Pediatrics. I maintain my University affiliation as a visiting clinical attending at the Children's Hospital at Yale-New Haven. A point of pride has been my designation as a "Top Doc" by Castle Connolly as well as by Connecticut Magazine.

My wife, an accomplished Stamford teacher, together with our three wonderful children, are my greatest source of happiness and pride, and have given me endless opportunities to grow and learn both as a father and a pediatrician. Skiing, biking, coaching recreation league basketball and family vacations are among my favorite pastimes.

something done: do it yourself, hire someone or forbid your kids to do it.”
