PHONE CALLS/AFTER HOURS CARE

For urgent matters after regular office hours, call our office and press "9" at the prompt. Our answering service will take your name, phone number and a brief message. Expect a call back within one hour. Please disable call-blocking features or the doctor may be unable to reach you.

At New England Pediatrics, we strive to provide excellent medical care to our patients and to provide continuity-of-care after business hours.  After-hours phone calls are meant to provide recommendations regarding urgent medical needs when our office is closed.  These calls are not intended to diagnose or treat health conditions, rather to provide guidance until the next day.

All non-urgent questions such as medication refills, scheduling office appointments, or other non-urgent medical issues should be addressed when the office is open.  Refills will not be called in after hours. If you have questions regarding dosing for over-the-counter medications, please refer first to the packaging, or else refer to the online calculator below.

Beginning on May 15th, we will begin a nurse triage system overnight.  This means that phone calls overnight will be answered by a trained pediatric registered nurse with a physician from New England Pediatrics available as back-up when needed. Nurse triage systems are used by most pediatric practices, and they may help relieve some of the burden of high call volume that we’ve experienced over the last several years. Using this service overnight will allow us to continue to provide the highest level of care to our patients and families.

PHONE CALLS

NURSE TRIAGE During regular hours, our nurses are well- trained to answer your questions about routine baby and child care, common symptoms, over-the-counter medications, and vaccine reactions. To leave a non-urgent message for a nurse, include your name and number, child's name and age, topic of concern, and best contact time. If you believe your child has a serious complaint that requires a same-day visit, request an appointment directly with the receptionist.

PHYSICIAN CALLBACKS Our doctors are eager to answer your questions and concerns but cannot be interrupted during patient visits, and most often will return calls late in the day. For non-urgent matters, return calls may take several days. If you have not heard back from the doctor, speak with the triage nurse who can often expedite a response to your questions.
